Welcome!
My name is Hiba Zerrougui (she/her) and I have a PhD in political science from McGill University.
My research and teaching interests lie at the intersection of contentious politics, social movement studies, comparative authoritarianism, political violence, welfare state, feminist and intersectional theories, research ethics and interpretive methodology. My doctoral research focuses on the normalization of contestation and violence in authoritarian regimes, and more specifically on authoritarian governance in contexts where protests are commonplace. My research focuses on the case of postcolonial Algeria, and has been supported by several scholarships and grants such as the Canada 150 Research Chair on Global Governance and Security (2021-2025), the Joseph Armand Bombardier Canada Graduate Scholarship (2015-2018), McGill Graduate Mobility Award (2018), Schull Yang International Experience Award (2017) and a Project on Middle East Political Science (POMEPS) Travel – Research – Engagement grant (2018), and a writing fellowship at the Center for International Studies at the Université de Montréal (2020-2021).
